The Black Coffee Foundation is putting children’s eye health in the spotlight with the launch of Gift of Sight by Black Coffee, a nationwide eye-testing initiative aimed at giving South African learners better access to vision care.

The program kicks off Monday, 9 February 2026, at Thabisang Primary School in Soweto, where over 700 school children will receive comprehensive eye screenings during a school uniform handover drive. Those identified with potential vision issues will get full eye exams and free spectacles at follow-up visits.

This initiative tackles a crucial but often overlooked factor in education: good vision. Early detection of eye problems can dramatically improve a child’s ability to read, write, concentrate, and engage both in class and beyond.

After its Gauteng debut, the Gift of Sight program will travel across South Africa, bringing eye care directly to schools in every province.

The project is made possible through partnerships with Tania Noach Optometrist T/A Vision Works Benmore, Morningside Eye, the South African Optometric Association (SAOA), and EyeCare4Kids, with generous support from Love Maison33 and JHB VIP. Beyond screenings, children needing advanced treatment or surgery are referred to specialists and supported through partner organizations.

Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, says:

“Good vision is essential for children to participate fully in school and in life. A simple missed vision problem can make learning harder, affect confidence, and limit a child’s potential. Through Gift of Sight, we want to make sure eyesight is never a barrier to opportunity. We’re proud to start in Orlando West, Soweto, and are committed to expanding this across South Africa throughout the year.”

Tania Noach adds:

“Partnering with the Black Coffee Foundation allows us to bring vital eye care directly into schools, where it’s needed most. Early detection is key. Gift of Sight helps identify concerns sooner, provide proper care, and give children the confidence and freedom to fully participate in their learning.”
