Cotton Fest 2024 delivered yet another unforgettable celebration of youth culture as Newtown Junction hosted the festival’s fifth edition this past weekend. Despite persistent rain, thousands of “Cotton Eaters” showed up with unwavering energy, embodying the spirit of unity, community, creativity, and responsibility that has defined the movement since its inception.
The festival once again proved its ability to bring together diverse elements of South Africa’s music landscape. Its three stages — the iconic Cotton Stage, the vibrant Lot, and the fast-rising Bunker — offered attendees a wide spectrum of sounds, from EDM and Gqom to Amapiano and alternative expressions. These platforms not only showcased established artists but also empowered emerging talent to perform in front of a passionate and engaged audience.
The Cotton Stage remained the heartbeat of the event, drawing massive crowds throughout the day. Despite the weather, fans were treated to impressive performances from some of the country’s most influential artists, including Young Stunna, DJ Zinhle, Elaine, Big Zulu, Emtee, Nasty C, Focalistic, and DJ Maphorisa. Each act delivered a standout set, reinforcing Cotton Fest’s reputation as a premier space for top-tier live music experiences.
A moving highlight of the day came as the festival honoured the late Riky Rick, Costa Titch, and AKA. Their presence was deeply felt as the crowd united in singing along to their timeless hits. The tribute underscored the festival’s commitment to preserving the legacy of the artists who helped shape and elevate South African youth culture.
Cotton Fest also featured strong support from major brands, including NikNaks, Coca-Cola, Castle Lite, Hunters, Klipdrift, Count Pushkin, 4th Street, Crocs, Jägermeister, Youth X by Nedbank, NBA Africa, MTV Base, YFM, VUSE, and Red Bull. Their interactive activations, competitions, and pop-ups contributed to the vibrant atmosphere and enhanced the overall experience for attendees.
The University of Cotton Fest (UFC), along with the festival’s partners and media collaborators, played an essential role in bringing the event to life. Their continued efforts ensured that Cotton Fest 2024 not only upheld its cultural significance but set a new benchmark for future editions.
With a powerful mix of music, community engagement, and cultural expression, this year’s festival reaffirmed Cotton Fest’s position as one of South Africa’s leading youth events. Anticipation is already building for Cotton Fest 2025, which promises to elevate the experience even further.
